Interval training workouts are great for fat loss and if your goal is fat loss, they should be the majority of your cardio workouts. The difference between interval training workouts and the typical cardio workout of maintaining one speed in regards to weight loss is fat loss. When performing interval training workouts, fat is burned primarily. However, when performing a steady cardio workout, fat as well as muscle is burned. You want to have fat loss, not muscle loss! In a study performed by Tremblay and company in the mid 1990’s, the results showed that subjects that performed interval training burned more fat and experienced a greater drop in body fat despite burning significantly fewer calories than the group who performed steady state cardio for very long periods of time(i.e. running on a treadmill at the same speed for an hour).  Other benefits of interval training is that the workouts are much shorter and no equipment is needed to complete the workouts.
