Side Effects of Splenda Sweetener

side effects of splenda sweetener Side Effects of Splenda SweetenerSplenda (sucralose) has been involved in many studies but before I go into numerous studies involving splenda sweetener, I want to begin with what spleda really is. Splenda is the brand name of the synthetic substance, sucralose. I am not going to bore you with the exact details of how sucralose is created, but I’ll summarize it. Sucralose is created in a 5 step process in which 3 hydroxyl groups are removed from a sucrose molecule (sucrose is a sugar molecule) and 3 chlorine atoms are added. Sucralose is a synthetic substance that was made in a lab and was approved in the FDA in 1999. It was approved without there being a single, long-term, human study to show its safety for human consumption. Until this day, the longest human study of sucralose is 13 weeks.

Are There Side Effects of Splenda Sweetener?

The side effects of splenda sweetener start with Chlorine. Chlorine, which is found in sucralose, is proven to be a toxic substance. Splenda’s marketing tactic with this information is that chlorine is found in certain foods that we eat such as table salt (NaCl) and many different foods and beverages. Therefore, the question is then, if chlorine is found in our food, what’s the problem? The difference is that chloride is found in our food, not chlorine. In nature, chlorine is not found by itself, but is found bonded with other molecules in the form of an ionic bond. An ionic bond is formed between atoms of opposite charges. For example, in the case of sodium and chlorine (this is table salt), sodium has a positive charge while chlorine has a negative charge, thus balancing out the charges into a stable compound of sodium chloride (NaCl). Chloride exists mainly in the form of salt and is essential to life as it is found in oceans, in our bodies, and in nature. Splenda, on the other hand, contains carbons. When chlorine reacts to a carbon, it forms chlorocarbons, which are potentially very dangerous and not stable compounds (mustard gas used in WW2 by the Germans was a chlorocarbon.)  Chlorocarbons are what are used in pesticides! Just think about it for a second. The substance you use to sweeten your coffee is from the same family as pesticides that are poisons to our bodies and that are detrimental to our health. I’m going to backtrack for a second and talk about why sucralose was invented. In attempts to find a new insecticide, the individual who conducted the experiment tasted the substance by accident and found it to be very sweet. Thus, what was meant to be a new insecticide turned into Splenda. Just to give an example of the possible dangers of splenda side effects, one type of chlorocarbon, Agent Orange (PCB), was linked to cancer and many other problems associated with the immune, reproductive, and nervous systems.

The way Splenda markets sucralose is that it is natural. It uses the slogan “Made from sugar, so it takes like sugar.” This could not be farther from the truth. In nature, every disaccharide is made from at least one glucose molecule. Sucralose, however, has no glucose unit, and is thus, a brand new substance in nature. Sucralose is 600 times sweeter than sugar and since it is indigestible by the human body, it has zero calories. The reason that Splenda has zero calories is because the human body has no way to digest it and if the body cannot digest this food, many side effects of splenda may ensue after prolonged consumption. There are no enzymes currently in the human body that are able to break down sucralose. This is because there has never been a need for the body to be able to digest a substance such as sucralose, because, well, Splenda is a man-made artificial sweetener. diet beverages contain splenda sweetener Side Effects of Splenda Sweetener

Now for the studies conducted on the substance of sucralose. There are only 6 total human studies on sucralose, all of which have reported no detrimental negative effects. Of all the studies conducted on the side effects of this artificial sweetener, however, the longest one was only 13 weeks, which is not nearly long enough to be an adequate study to determine the side effects of splenda as there were minimal results showing any side effects. However, these studies are almost useless considering that a substance like Splenda may and most likely has many harsh long-term effects, not short-term effects. Another huge factor in these studies on the side effects on splenda is that they have been conducted by Mcneil Nutritionals, the same company that manufactures and makes tons of money off of Splenda. Mcneil Nutritionals has a strong agenda and is very biased with their studies as their business depends on it.

There have been many animal studies as well. In a 12 week study conducted with rats, many possible side effects were shown. These negative effects of splenda included a reduction in beneficial fecal microflora, increased fecal pH, and “enhanced expression levels of P-gp, CYP3A4, and CYP2D1, which are known to limit the bioavailability of orally, administered drugs” (http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/15287390802328630).

In another study assessing the harmful effects of sucralose recently conducted on rats in 2008 at Purdue University, there was a strong correlation between rats splenda sweetener shown to play role in obesity Side Effects of Splenda Sweetenerconsuming sucralose and weight gain, one of the many potential side effects of sucralose. One group of rats were given regular feed and yogurt sweetened with sugar, while the other group of rats were given regular feed and yogurt sweetened with sucralose. The rats given the sucralose had significantly larger weight gains than its sugar-fed rat counterparts. The researchers suspect that there could be a possibility that the body is unable to associate sweetness with calories after a prolonged period of sucralose intake, thus inhibiting the human body’s ability to assess caloric intake, resulting in overeating and weight gain. Ironically, this possible side effects of splenda sweetener may be a cause of the obesity epidemic taking over the U.S. and many other parts of the world.

In yet another study on the harmful side effects of this artificial sweetener conducted at Duke University in 2008, splenda consumption in rats was also linked to weight gain, not weight loss, as what most people would have expected. Other negative negative effects of splenda included a 50% decrease of good bacteria in the intestines of the rats and an increase in the pH of the rat’s intestines. Rats consuming sucralose were also unable to absorb crucial health-related drugs.

The reason I decided to write this article on splenda side effects is because of my daily encounters with individuals and their view of artificial sweeteners such as the splenda sweetener and aspertame sweetener. I worked at a hospital and many of the patients would order “diet” products because they believed that they were being very healthy when doing so not knowing the potential side effects of splenda sweetener and other sweeteners such as aspertame. I was at a restaurant the other day when I overheard two ladies contemplate whether to get diet coke or regular coke. They ended up getting diet coke because it was “healthier.” The marketers of diet products have manipulated the ignorant public so well that people legitimately believe that they are being healthier when consuming artificial sweeteners.Avoid diet beverages that contain splenda sweetener Side Effects of Splenda Sweetener To numerous people, diet products are too good to be true: A great tasting product with zero calories? The only problem is that, well, they are too good to be true as there appears to be many side effects. A countless amount of people truly believe that consuming carbohydrates and sugars should be avoided at all costs and that sweeteners such as aspartame and splenda sweetener are great substitutions. Let me just give a brief overview of the importance of carbohydrates. I have a whole article on this very subject in the “nutrition” section of the site so I won’t go into too much detail. The body needs carbohydrates for energy. Without carbohydrates, every day activities would be nearly impossible because no one would have energy!! Carbohydrates consist of sugar. What really should be said is that certain carbohydrates should be avoided. Simple sugars such as cakes and donuts should be avoided. Fruits, whole grains, and vegetables all have carbohydrates and should not be avoided. They are some of the healthiest foods that nature has to offer. A balanced diet should consist of approximately 60% carbohydrates! That is a huge portion of your diet.

The marketing of splenda sweetener has been remarkable as people truly believe that splenda is “natural” and “healthy.” Splenda sweetener is currently being sued by many, many companies for false advertising because of this. Although there are no long-term studies conducted on the side effects of splenda that really show how unhealthy this product really is, I hope the information available to us is enough to show us that this is not a “miracle” product. I hope this article has opened your eyes to the possible negative side effects of sucralose and other synthetic sweeteners. Contrary to what many people believe, sugar and salt are both essential to a healthy diet. In many diets, they are over-consumed, and can cause many health-related problems, but sugar and salt should not be eliminated from your diet. What exactly are you using splenda for?
Stevia can be an alternative. Stevia is a plant that is 300 times sweeter than sugar and has zero calories. However, there have been studies that show that stevia may have some potentially negative side effects. Not too much research has been done on stevia, but I am a firm believer that most things found in nature, such as stevia, are much better alternatives than chemicals, such as splenda, which are made in a lab. The biggest alternative to splenda, however, is sugar. Glucose, which makes up sugar, is the energy molecule of the human body. Without glucose, you would have no energy. With that being said, the sources from which you attain your sugar is very important. Sugar (simple and complex) should be obtained in your diet from fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, and legumes.. You want to avoid added sugar from products such as cake and ice cream. The reason why sugar from something like fruits is “less harmful” than sugar from a cake is because fruits have fiber. Fiber controls your blood sugar by allowing a gradual incline in your blood sugar. Cakes, on the other hand, cause a spike in your blood sugar which can be very dangerous, which is why added sugars should be avoided for optimal health.
