I Reviewed The 4 Options Below Based On 6 Factors (No It’s Not Random)

This review is assuming that the ideal scenario for your mushroom coffee is:

  1. Great and comforting taste (or refreshing taste if you like it cold.)
  2. Boost in energy and focus without jitters, anxiety, or mid-day crashes.
  3. No headaches or any other side effects due to excess caffeine.
  4. Get as many health benefits from the mushrooms and the other ingredients as possible.

You don’t want to relax or sleep.

You want to wake up and get going in the morning, perform at your peak, or power through the afternoon slump while enjoying the taste of coffee.

Some of those things will matter more to you than others.

You may want to cut down caffeine without giving up the taste of coffee altogether, or the health benefits of mushrooms may be extremely important for you.

With that in mind, I give you the best option based on which one of those benefits matters more to you.

To do this, I break down each option in the list based on the following 6 criteria ranking each one from 1-5. Five being the highest and one being the lowest:

  • Coffee/caffeine
  • Mushrooms
  • Other Ingredients (usually adaptogenic herbs)
  • Added Sugars or Artificial Sweeteners
  • Preservatives
  • Taste

So for each of the products I give you an overview of what’s good and bad. Then I dive deep into each of the criteria so you can understand the reasoning behind it.

Let’s get right into it.

Our Rating
Our #1 Rated Mushroom Coffee
5 out of 5

Overall, this mushroom coffee from Fresh Cap is the best option if you’re looking for your morning cup of coffee combined with the scientifically proven benefits of mushrooms.

Here’s why:

Lion’s Mane will give you the sharp mental acuity you’re looking for and Chaga will boost your immunity, so besides the enhanced productivity, you’re protecting yourself from getting sick.

mushroom coffee from freshcap

And we all know how much a cold or flu can affect productivity, mood, and focus.

You also get the coffee taste without all the jitters and mid-day crashes since it has about half the caffeine in a regular cup of coffee.

Just enough to get you going in the morning without all the negative side-effects.

(If you’re looking for an extra punch of caffeine, Om Mushrooms as #3 is the one you should get)

But it gets better…

This one has ashwagandha in it…. And their ashwagandha is of the highest quality…

and will help you alleviate some of the negative effects that the small amount of caffeine may cause you, giving you a calm and steady focus throughout the day.

If you’re unsure what ashwagandha is, don’t worry, because we’ll go over it in detail below.

The only real downside to this one is the price, since it’s the 2nd most expensive per serving in this list. If you’re going for quality and nutrient density, however, it more than makes up for the slightly harder price point.

why i love mushroom coffee freshcap

Ingredients — Organic Instant Coffee, Organic Lion’s Mane, (Hericium Erinaceus), Fruiting Body Extract, Organic Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) Fruiting Body Extract, Organic Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera) Root Extract (KSM-66®).

Freshcap doesn’t list the percentage of each ingredient on its website.

Naturally, if you are going to buy a mushroom coffee you want to know how much coffee and mushrooms there are inside.

I did some digging and found the following that you can’t find very easily on their website:

  • Each serving has around 40mg of caffeine.
  • 200mg of Organic Ashwagandha Root Extract (KSM-66®)
  • 750mg of Chaga and Lion’s Mane total (not 750mg of each.)

Let’s continue with the breakdown:

Ranking Factor #1: Organic Instant Coffee +4 points

With 40 mg of Organic coffee, I love this one as a great coffee alternative.

It doesn’t have the biggest caffeine punch on our list (that would be our 3rd option with Om Mushrooms) and I love it as a great coffee alternative because you’re still getting the benefits of coffee and caffeine without all the jitters, anxiety and all the nasty side-effects that come with too much caffeine.

The primary ingredient of Freshcap’s Mushroom Coffee is still coffee, so you are not avoiding the caffeine completely although you’ll have a lower concentration than your regular coffee.

It has 40mg of caffeine which is about half that of a regular cup of brewed coffee according to FDA and Mayo Clinic

Ranking Factor #2: Chaga and Lion’s Mane Mushrooms +4 points

Freshcap has the highest quality mushroom supplements in the market.

They make them using the whole fruiting body (the actual mushroom) which has the most beneficial compounds and not the mycelium (the “roots” of the mushroom), which are not as nutritious.

Most brands make their mushroom supplements with mycelium to produce more products at cheaper prices sacrificing quality, but Freshcap only uses the highest quality, fruiting bodies of the mushrooms which will give you all the mushroom benefits you’re looking for.

All their mushroom supplements have high concentrations (>32%) of Beta Glucans which are the healing compounds in mushrooms that fight cancer, boost immunity, and help your brain, among other benefits.

For comparison, most brands will fall between the 15-5% Beta Glucan content in their mushrooms (not the total product.)

Plus, all of their mushrooms are tested for purity, heavy metals, microbial contamination, gluten, and pesticides before and after they are packaged in the US-based GMP Certified facility.

The only reason they don’t get 5 points when the quality is so high is that it doesn’t have Cordyceps which is one of the most recognized mushrooms to improve energy levels.

Ranking Factor #3: Other Ingredients — Ashwagandha Root Extract +5 points

Ashwagandha is one of the most famous and used herbs in the Indian Ayurveda.

And not without reason, it’s been used for thousands of years to reduce stress, henche why it’s been called an “adaptogen.”

You’d think that’s a bad thing since you don’t want to calm down with coffee, but rather wake up.

But Ashwagandha is also a tonic herb that fights fatigue and helps with achieving that calm state of heightened alertness and focus that we talked about at the beginning.

You can learn more about it here:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3252722/

Besides, the Ashwagandha found in Freshcap Mushroom Coffee is of the highest quality because it exclusively uses ashwagandha root (which has all the good stuff you want) and leaves out the leaves of Ashwagandha.

Sourced from the company Ixoreal, KSM-66 is produced using a unique proprietary extraction process that took 14 years of Research and Development.

They use no chemicals or alcohol for the extractions and it’s the most concentrated and bioavailable on the market.

Plus it has lots of clinical trials to back up its quality.

https://ksm66ashwagandhaa.com/

So with 200mg of ashwagandha you will:

  • Achieve a calm state of focus
  • Turn your mind from a foggy mess into a clear summer sky so you can think and perform at your peak
  • Protect your health, body, and mind from the stress of everyday life

Ranking Factor #4 – Sugars or Artificial Sweeteners +5 points

There are no added sugars or artificial sweeteners which is great because:

  1. You don’t get any of the nasty side-effects like blood sugar spikes, energy crashes, upset stomach, etc
  2. If you want it sweeter you can always add sugars or artificial sweeteners that work for you giving you full control of what you’re putting inside your body

Ranking Factor #5 – Preservatives +5 points

I don’t think this one needs explanations: the fewer chemicals something has and the more natural its ingredients the better.

FreshCap Mushroom Coffee has no preservatives and the ingredients are 100% natural.

They are also certified organic, Non-GMO, veggan, paleo, and gluten free.

Ranking Factor #6 – Taste +5 points

It obviously has an earthy/mushroom smell (shocking realization for a mushroom coffee I know.)

That said, there’s not a single review complaining about the taste, which is amazing considering it has no added sugars or other ingredients to make it sweeter or enhance the taste.

Most reviews say it doesn’t taste earthy at all, in most cases it says that it just tastes like coffee.

This makes sense since it still has a good amount of coffee even though it has about 6 times less caffeine than a regular cup of plain coffee.

The truth of the matter is that you will have to try it to find out. But if you want to hear what others have to say about the taste, here are some reviews about it:

“I love the flavor and do not feel the crash I would feel with other coffee. Would highly recommend 😊

–Thereese

“I was hesitant about the taste. This is the best thing I’ve ever ever tasted and it feels real and genuine as my body responds so positively to this amazing coffee. You have a customer for life <3”

–Sonia

“My friends thought I was crazy…..and believed mushroom coffee would taste….like dirt? like mold? like nothing?

This coffee has AMAZING taste!! Mix it in and you even get sort of a ‘crema’ on the top!! And then wrap your hands around your warm mug and take in the incredible smell. Earthy – but definitely doesn’t taste like “dirt”!!

It has replaced regular coffee for me. My stomach can’t handle coffee first thing in the morning….but it LOVES mushroom coffee – no problems at all. And instead of the *jolt* that just makes you feel bad later in the morning, I find it just clears the “fog” of morning away. Long-lasting clarity without a headache or drop in energy later.”

–Gae

“I was skeptical about the mushroom coffee, but now I am a true believer! Not only is it a tasty coffee, but I feel energized and ready for the day whenever I drink it. I like to make myself a cup on exam days (I’m a med student) and it always helps calm my nerves and leaves me feeling clearheaded and focused. The coffee powder has a slight earthy/mushroom smell, but personally I can’t taste anything unusual or different. Tastes delicious hot or iced!”

–Virginia

“Easy mix and taste is like coffee”

–Michelle

Pros

  • Highest quality mushrooms, especially Lion’s Mane for mental focus and clarity
  • Coffee taste without as much caffeine as a regular cup of coffee
  • Highest quality Ashwagandha to eliminate stress and provide a great state of calm focus
  • No added sugars, artificial sweeteners or preservatives
  • 6 times less caffeine than a regular cup of coffee

Cons

  • No Cordyceps Militaris (the best mushroom for energy)
  • Can get a bit pricey for some people, but if you’re looking for a healthy coffee mushroom, it is 100% worth it.

  • No added sugars, artificial sweeteners, or preservatives
Our Rating
Our #2 Rated Best Mushroom Coffee
4.8 out of 5
mudwtr mushroom coffee

With around 1/3 of the caffeine you’ll find in a regular cup of coffee, Mud/Wtr leans on black tea and mushrooms like Lion’s Mane and Cordyceps to give you natural energy and focus without the jitters.

That said, it’s not completely caffeine free (it has around 32mg/serving) and has no coffee in it.

Some people are trying to avoid coffee just because of its caffeine content even though they love the taste and flavor of coffee, so you’re still getting some caffeine without any perks of coffee, like the flavor.

That said, the amount of caffeine is unlikely to give you any problems unless you’re VERY sensitive to it, but it can still give you the boost in energy and the “I’m finally awake” feeling you get from coffee.

Besides, if you’re not looking for the pure flavor of coffee and you usually mix your morning cup with milk, honey, or any other thing for the taste, then you’re not going to notice the lack of coffee flavor.

Speaking of flavor, you also get some chocolatey notes because of the organic cocoa.

Mud/Wtr Choco

Another big plus for Mud/Wtr is that the ayurvedic herbs, adaptogens, and cacao give you a lot of health benefits beyond energy and focus like boosting immunity and reducing inflammation.

So by taking it, you’re not just getting an extra boost in energy and focus to go about your day, but you’re also improving and protecting your overall health over the long run.

The biggest downside is the price since it’s the most expensive one on this list.
To try it without subscription you have to go to their shop page where the whole catalog appears and select the on-demand option https://mudwtr.com/collections/shop

Ingredients

Organic mushroom blend (chaga, reishi, lion’s mane, cordyceps mycelial biomass cultured on organic oats), Organic cacao, Organic Spice Blend (organic cinnamon, organic turmeric, organic ginger, organic cardamom, organic black pepper, organic nutmeg, organic cloves), Organic black tea powder, Himalayan pink salt.

Let’s break them down:

Ranking Factor #1 – Black Tea (instead of coffee) +4

They are using organic black tea powder instead of coffee to get some of the energy coffee provides without the jittery side-effects because you’re only getting about ⅓ of the caffeine (32mg) you’d be getting with a regular cup of coffee.

This is probably where most of their caffeine content comes from and it’s an excellent alternative if you are trying to get away from caffeine.

However, you’re still getting some caffeine without any perks of coffee, like the flavor.

That’s why even though it has the lower caffeine amounts in this list (from those that have caffeine), it’s getting only 4 points and not 5.

But as I said before;  if you’re not looking for the pure flavor of coffee and you usually mix your morning cup with milk, honey, or any other thing for the taste, then you’re not going to notice the lack of coffee flavor and you won’t get any negative side effects from this amount of caffeine

**Note**

They don’t have the caffeine content in the label but someone asked them and in the questions next to the reviews you can find this answer:

“:rise has about 1/7th the caffeine of a 12 ounce cup of premium drip coffee. I say ‘about’ because the caffeine content of coffee can vary by up to 30mg depending on the beans and roast method, according to the FDA. Though more subtle, the caffeine content of MUDWTR can vary as well, but by blending a 6g serving of MUDWTR in a 12 ounce cup of water you will typically yield around 32mg of caffeine plus or minus a couple milligrams.”

Ranking Factor #2 – Mushroom Blend +3

The good thing about this is the diversity and the amount:

You get 560mg each of Chaga, Reishi, Cordyceps, and Lion’s Mane per 6g serving of Mud/Wtr, which is quite a bit.

The problem is that they use mycelial biomass (the “roots” of the mushroom) and fruiting bodies (the actual mushroom) instead of fruiting bodies alone and they don’t specify the percentage of each.

The mycelium of mushrooms is cheaper than the fruiting body but it also has less of the beneficial compounds that are so good for your health.

Plus, the mycelium is grown on gluten-free oats and the 2 things can’t be separated so you’re also getting some gluten-free oats in your mix.

That said, the mycelium still has some benefits and they use it in combination with the fruiting body which has the most benefits so you’ll still feel the ‘shroom difference.

To know more about the difference between mycelium and fruiting bodies and what makes a good mushroom supplement go here.

To know more about the difference between mycelium and fruiting bodies and what makes a good mushroom supplement go here.

Ranking Factor #3 – Other Ingredients +5

Organic cacao grown in Peru 1.9g/serving — really high quality cacao at great concentrations to give you a chocolatey flavor and all the benefits of cacao like improved blood flow and lower blood pressure.

Himalayan pink salt 0.02g/serving — good in low concentrations to boost flavor and mineral content that your body needs for all its complicated processes, definitely better than table salt.

Organic Spice Blend (organic cinnamon, organic turmeric, organic ginger, organic cardamom, organic black pepper, organic nutmeg, organic cloves.)

Obviously all those species are great for your health and to add some flavor to your cup of mud.

But I want to touch on two of them specifically because of their benefits to your health and the quantity you’ll find them in your cup of mud:

  1. Turmeric — 420mg/serving

Turmeric is anti-inflammatory and has a lot of health benefits for you so by having this much turmeric each time you drink your coffee, you’re really helping your overall health, not just your energized, focused, and ready to tackle your day.

This gets extra points because of its combination with black pepper.

Taken together, black pepper increases the absorption of curcumine (the bioactive compound in turmeric) by up to 2000% thanks to black pepper’s bioactive compound peperin.

So next time you’re cooking with turmeric, make it a little bi spicier with black pepper, your health will thank you for it.

  1. Cinnamon — 500mg/serving

Not all cinnamon is created equal. There are 2 main types:

Cassia cinnamon is widely grown around the world, it’s cheaper, and of lower quality than Ceylon cinnamon.

And for those reasons, Cassia cinnamon is the most consumed type worldwide, almost all the cinnamon you find in stores is this variety.

In Mud/Wtr though, you have Ceylon Cinnamon which is considered the highest quality of the two and the best flavor and aroma.

Ceylon is tan-brown in color and contains many tight sticks with soft layers while Cassia is dark brown (even red-ish) with thicker sticks with a rougher texture.

In the ingredients section of the product page you may see that they list Masala Chai but then on the label there’s nothing with that name.

That’s because Masala Chai is a tea made from balck tea leaves and spices, so they list those ingredients separately.

Which, btw, Mud/Wtr also offers their own creamer and sweetener.

Ranking Factor #5 – Preservatives +5 points

I don’t think this one needs explanations, the fewer chemicals something has and the more natural its ingredients the better.

Mud/Wtr has no preservatives and the ingredients are 100% organic. In fact, it’s certified 100% Organic, non-gmo, gluten free & Whole30.

Ranking Factor #6 – Taste +4 points

Mud/Wtr has so many ingredients and spices that the flavor varies from person to person and it’s really hard to give an objective taste.

According to their team:

“The Masala Chai and cacao do the heavy lifting in the flavor department. It’s earthy, a little chocolatey, and slightly spicy. Like chai and hot cocoa had a lil hippy child.”

Other people have also reported that it has a tea-like taste, and as many people feel the chocolatey taste of the cocoa with the sprinkle of cinnamon.

Mud/Wtr did a taste review video with different people you can watch here:

As with the others, you’ll have to try it out to find out. But I’ll say this:

They have 9840 reviews and the average of them all is 4.7 stars.

I don’t think that such a high rating from SO many reviews can be achieved if your product tastes like…

Well, like mud.

“I just started giving MUDWTR a fair try last week. The flavor is mild and extremely interesting. I found myself really looking forward to my next cup. The week moved on and I was just “feelin good”…The big surprise came Sunday. We were rushing to see friends, so I popped a caffeine tablet (our go-to on the run energy boost). Well, my hands were actually trembling from the jitters! I felt my heart racing and was more than a little agitated. It wasn’t till then that I realized why I had felt so good the week before! Started this week with my MUD, happy as can be. Looking forward to trying it iced later today.”

–Lynne

“Great product, great company, successfully kicked my coffee habit

Very grateful for MUD and it’s ingredients and overall very happy with the product. It’s the one thing that helped me kick my coffee addiction and provides so many benefits. Great taste and I still get that warm morning ritual. My only beef is the staining on my teeth! Have to be very diligent to brush right after I drink it :(“

–Lindsay

Good coffee alternative, not replacement (in terms of taste)

I like this product for what it is, and I agree that it’s a good coffee alternative if you’re in the coffee game exclusively for the caffeine. That said, taste wise, MUDWTR and coffee each have their time & place. MUDWTR is this cool chai-cocoa hybrid, with all that warm spice & earthy sweetness. Coffee, on the other hand, gives me those smoky, bitter notes. If you’re only drinking coffee for the energy, then yeah, MUDWTR’s got you covered. But if you actually enjoy the taste of coffee, keep your favorite roast handy and enjoy MUDWTR as its own thing.”

– RH

“I love this stuff. Improved focus without the jitters of coffee or the crash. Coming from someone who used to drink 6+ cups of coffee a day…I do find myself drinking two of these a day but the energy and focus I get lasts much longer and doesn’t leave me exhausted later, instead I find myself relaxed. I add cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and pumpkin pie spice. Top it off with some heavy cream.”

–Joseph

“Was skeptical on how it would taste but it gave my taste buds a flavor that is one of a kind. It seemed like was grounded to earth with every sip of mud.”

–Patrick

Our #3 Rated Best Mushroom Coffee
4.7 out of 5

If you don’t want to cut back on the caffeine and are looking for a coffee mushroom that tastes just like your regular coffee but has extra benefits of mushrooms and other herbs, then this one from Om is the one for you.

Om Mushroom Coffee Blend

It has around 120mg of caffeine per serving which is a bit more than your regular cup of brewed coffee.

Although the mushroom quality isn’t the best, it’s still pretty good and you’ll be getting some of the benefits of a wide array of mushrooms, especially Lion’s Mane for focus and Cordyceps for energy.

The biggest plus aside from tasting just like coffee, is the high concentration of Ginkgo Biloba which has been shown to improve mental performance and focus while improving your overall health, especially your cardiovascular health.

om mushroom coffee

Ingredients

Organic Coffee Powder (120mg of Caffeine), Organic Myceliated Oats, Organic Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Powder (150mg), Organic Reishi Extract Powder (35% Beta Glucans)

Mushroom Blend – 2g

Organic Lion’s Mane mycelial biomass and fruiting body, Organic Cordyceps Militaris mycelial biomass and fruiting body, Organic Turkey Tail mycelial biomass and primordia.

Let’s break them down:

Ranking Factor #1 – Coffee +3 points

With around 120mg of caffeine, it has 3 times more caffeine than the 2nd with highest caffeine amount in this list (FreshCap) and 4 times more than the 3rd with most caffeine (Mud/Wtr)

So it’s the perfect option for you if you don’t want to cut back on the caffeine and are looking for a coffee mushroom that tastes just like your regular coffee but has extra benefits of mushrooms and other herbs.

Speak of mushrooms and herbs benefits:

Ranking Factor #2 – Mushroom Blend +3 points

You get the most important mushrooms for energy and mental focus which are Lion’s Mane and Cordyceps.

However they use mycelial biomass (the “roots” of the mushroom) and fruiting bodies (the actual mushroom) instead of fruiting bodies alone and they don’t specify the percentage of each.

If it has the same “downside” as Mud/wtr but with less diversity… why doesn’t it have a lower rating?

Because its Reishi mushroom is of the highest quality.

They’ve added Reishi mushroom standardized to 35% Beta Glucans which is INSANELY high beta glucan content. Most mushroom supplements don’t make it even half as high.

The Beta Glucans are the REALLY good stuff in mushrooms, these are the compounds that give the mushrooms most of their health and healing properties.

They fight cancer, boost immunity, fight the damage of stress, etc.

So yeah, you want as many of those as you can get.

Reishi is also great because it can help you combat stress and fatigue, so it can give you an extra boost of energy while alleviating some of the effects of caffeine.

To what extent it will do so really depends on you since the amount of caffeine is quite high but it will probably not eliminate them all, especially if you’re sensitive to it.

Ranking Factor #3 – Other Ingredients +5 points

Ginkgo Biloba has been shown in multiple clinical trials to slow cognitive decline, improve short term memory, processing speed, attention span, and reaction time.

Scientists believe that a big reason for these benefits is Ginkgo Biloba’s ability to improve blood flow throughout the body and particularly in the brain.

Makes sense:

Improved blood flow to the brain, improved brain.

Match checks out.

Ginkgo Biloba can also improve neurogenesis (formation of new neurons) which is pretty important for memory formation and learning.

While the scientific studies on neurogenesis have been done on rats, the results are very promising.

Especially when you combine them with the evidence in human clinical trials where Ginkgo Biloba raises the concentrations of neuropeptides in the brain (like BDNF) that aid neurogenesis, among other things.

And the concentration of Ginkgo Biloba in 1 serving of Om’s Mushroom Coffee is enough to produce these effects, at least in theory, most of the scientific studies have been conducted testing doses of 120-360mg and you are getting 150mg with this.

Om Mushrooms Morning Energy Blend has no preservatives and the ingredients are 100% organic and it’s certified vegan, gluten free, non-GMO, and kosher.

Ranking Factor #6 – Taste +5 points

Due to the high amount of coffee it tastes like, well, just like coffee.

So if you are a coffee lover and the taste drives you crazy, this will do it for you.

“Love that I can drink cold or hot. I’m a bullet proof hot coffee and an avid cold brew kinda of person. Plus a single Tsp in hot water on the go is perfect! Taste just like coffee!”

–Rochelle

“Best mushroom coffee for taste and energy”

–Gaylord

–Elika

“Been on this for three weeks now and it’s a natural energy. No jitters, or jumping off walls but more importantly, I’m not sluggish or aim for a nap at all.”

–Rebecca

“It’s delicious and I absolutely notice a difference in my clarity. A bit pricey for me.”

–Sara

Pros

  • Taste just like coffee
  • Good mushroom diversity that includes Lion’s Mane (focus) and Cordyceps (energy)
  • High amounts and quality of Ginkgo Biloba for improved focus, circulation, and overall health
  • No added sugars, artificial sweeteners, or preservatives

Cons

  • High amounts of caffeine compared to other mushroom coffees, has about ½ of a regular cup of coffee
  • Not highest quality mushrooms because they use a lot of mycelium which doesn’t have as many health benefits

Overall the combination of Cordyceps Militaris and Sinenis, Maca root powder, Lion’s Mane, and Rhodiola can really give you the boost in energy and focus you’re looking for without any negative side-effects from coffee or caffeine.

You won’t get the coffee taste, this is your best option as a morning “coffee” if you want to eliminate coffee or caffeine completely since it has no coffee or teas that contain caffeine.

The taste is very tea-like so it tastes good without being overwhelming and you can always add it to your preferred beverage to enhance or even hide the taste.

You also get the perks of Rhodiola Rosea which will help you fight stress and anxiety and give a calm and deep state of focus.

If you are looking for a morning energy boost without ANY coffee or caffeine, this is the blend for you.

Ingredients

Mushroom Blend — Organic cordyceps (cordyceps militaris) mycelial biomass & fruiting body, organic cordyceps (cordyceps sinensis) mycelial biomass, organic Lion’s Mane mycelial biomass and fruiting body, organic Reishi mycelial biomass and fruiting body, organic Chaga mycelial biomass and fruiting body, Organic Turkey Tail mycelial biomass and fruiting body, organic King Trumpet mycelial biomass and fruiting body.

Focus & Energy Blend — Organic Maca Root Powder, Organic Rhodiola Rosea Root Extract

Other Ingredients — Organic Vanilla Chai Spice Blend, Organic Carob Powder, Sea Salt, Organic Myceliated Oats

Ranking Factor #1 – Coffee +5 points

The reason Om Mushrooms gets +5 points here is that there is neither coffee nor other products high in caffeine.

Yet you still get the energy and focus from coffee without jitters, anxiety, crashes, headaches, or any other side-effects.

It’s the perfect one if you are trying to quit coffee and caffeine altogether.

Ranking Factor #2 – Mushroom Blend +3 points

As with Mud/Wtr the biggest perk it’s the diversity and quantity of mushrooms

Each serving has 2g (2000mg) of proprietary blend containing:

Organic cordyceps (cordyceps militaris) mycelial biomass & fruiting body, organic cordyceps (cordyceps sinensis) mycelial biomass, organic Lion’s Mane mycelial biomass and fruiting body, organic Reishi mycelial biomass and fruiting body, organic Chaga mycelial biomass and fruiting body, Organic Turkey Tail mycelial biomass and fruiting body, organic King Trumpet mycelial biomass and fruiting body.

But Om Mushrooms Energy Blend also share the same problem with it’s Coffee Blend:

They use mycelial biomass (the “roots” of the mushroom) and fruiting bodies (the actual mushroom) instead of fruiting bodies alone and they don’t specify the percentage of each.

The mycelium of mushrooms is cheaper than the fruiting body but it also has less of the beneficial compounds that are so good for your health.

Plus, the mycelium is grown on gluten-free oats and the 2 things can’t be separated so you’re also getting some gluten-free oats in your mix.

That said, the mycelium still has some benefits and they use it in combination with the fruiting body which has the most benefits so you’ll still feel the ‘shroom difference, especially with so many different mushrooms inside.

Ranking Factor #3 – Other Ingredients +4 points

This product’s energy and focus blend is pretty good quality.

It only has 2 ingredients and you get 918mg of this blend per serving.

Organic Maca root powder for natural energy.

A lot of people on youtube, google, biohacking forums, etc put Maca root as something awesome for energy.

In truth, there’s not a lot of good scientific evidence for this but there’s still a lot of anecdotal evidence.

There’s some evidence that it can indeed boost energy but these are mainly animal studies.

Some research also suggests that Maca root increases libido so if you want to have fun right after you wake up Maca root could be helpful

Organic Rhodiola Rosea extract for focus.

Rhodiola is an adaptogen herb that reduces stress and anxiety and the anger and confusion associated with it

It also increases serotonin and reduces fatigue.

Rhodiola stimulates the release of Neuropeptide Y which is a relaxing substance your body naturally produces in response to stress so you can calm down and properly focus with the stress response overriding your self-control and cognition.

Speaking of which, Rhodiola also helps with cognition and it’s been shown to reduce mental fatigue involving complex cognitive functions.

The reason I rate this as 3 and not higher is because Maca root powder doesn’t have a lot of scientific proof backing up its energy increasing claims and while Rhodiola is effective in reducing stress and helping focus, is not as potent as ashwagandha for example.

Om Mushrooms Morning Energy Blend has no preservatives and the ingredients are 100% organic and it’s certified vegan, gluten free, non-GMO, and kosher.

Ranking Factor #6 – Taste +3 points

Taste, as always, is subjective but you can expect a chai tea-like taste with some hints of vanilla.

It tastes good without being overwhelming and you can always add it to your preferred beverage to enhance or even hide the taste.

If you really like the taste of coffee, then it’s something you’ll definitely notice. The flavor isn’t bad, it just doesn’t taste like coffee.

“I like the taste, then the energy that I get takes me through the whole day.”

–Mary

“I enjoy the flavor.”

–Irma

“I love this product! It is a great alternative to coffee and tastes like a chai latte! Love the energy it brings as well!”

–Lorraine

Pros

  • No caffeine option
  • Good mushroom diversity that includes Lion’s Mane (focus) and Cordyceps (energy)
  • Good amounts of Rhodiola Rosea extract for increased focus and fatigue reduction
  • No added sugars, artificial sweetener, or preservatives

Cons

  • Not highest quality mushrooms because they use a lot of mycelium which doesn’t have as many health benefits

Conclusion

Overall, all these options are better for you than plain coffee or any store-bought coffee.

If I were to choose one, 9 times out of 10 I would go with our #1 option from Fresh Cap.

You can get great taste, the comfort of your morning ritual, and the boost in energy and focus without jitters, anxiety, or mid-day crashes.

Plus, you also get a lot of other health benefits.

Whether that’s because of the mushrooms or the spices and herbs.

And one of the biggest things about these options is their lack of sugars, artificial sweeteners, or preservatives.

FIrst of all, it’s just healthier. Plain and simple. But it also gives you room to enhance the flavor or sweetness the way you prefer.

And with these 4 different options, you’ll be able to find the one that fits what you’re looking for.
