Mushrooms are gaining popularity as part of a healthy diet and in a variety of mushroom supplement blends. Used traditionally as food and medicine for thousands of years, a growing body of research on mushrooms that demonstrate immune boosting, health promoting, and nootropic (brain-boosting) effects from a variety of mushroom species.
While the amazing health benefits of mushrooms are without question, choosing the right mushroom supplement for your specific needs can be difficult.
That’s why we’re here, and why I wrote this review–to help you find the best mushroom supplement without the fluff.
As a master’s prepared nurse, I have dedicated my life to promoting health, preventing and treating disease, and analyzing current research findings. My goal is to share with you supplements and brands that have established safety and quality profiles.
For those on a time crunch, here is a quick review of the mushroom supplements we mention in the piece:
Below, we’ll go over 5 amazing mushroom supplement options that will help you boost your immune system, give you unbelievable mental clarity, and make your day that much better.
The National Institutes of Health warns consumers that while some supplements may have value, others may have contaminants, dangerous side effects, and quality issues.
Mushrooms that are sourced from areas of high pollution tend to accumulate high levels of toxic heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and arsenic. Further, several mushroom supplement companies have received warnings from the FDA due to presence of adulterations and substandard manufacturing practices.
As such, choosing brands and research-backed blends that have established safety and quality profiles is essential if you want to maximize health benefits. All brands I’ve listed below follow these important standards of quality.
If you’re looking for the perfect mushroom supplement, this one from Four Sigmatic is the one you want.
With over 1,000 reviews and a near-perfect five-star rating, I cannot recommend this one enough–which is why it got the #1 spot..
Where this option stands out above the rest is in its variety of mushrooms–it contains a whopping 10-research-backed blends (150 mg/serving of each mushroom)–which is the most in any supplement I’ve ever seen.
And why is this important?
Every mushroom brings with it unique bioactive compounds and health benefits–and by consuming a wide variety of mushrooms, you ensure you’re getting an optimal range of health benefits.
This blend is fantastic, and the research backs it–you can find a summary of each mushroom’s health benefits below. And if you’re a science nerd like I am, I linked to 14 different studies within the descriptions.
Chaga: consumed internationally as a beverage, researchers note chaga mushrooms possess antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-viral, anti-diabetic, cholesterol-lowering, and potential exercise-boosting properties.
Reishi: Traditionally referred to as the “mushroom of immortality,” reishi mushrooms are prized medicinal mushrooms. Current research is exploring immune-enhancing, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-bacterial, and other potential health promoting properties.

Cordyceps: Native to the Himalayin highlands and used by athletes internationally for performance, cordyceps are noted to have antitumor, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-blood clotting, cholesterol lowering, and pain-relieving effects.
Lions mane: Prized for potential brain/ cognitive enhancing effects, lion’s mane mushrooms contain a compound called erinacine A. This compound has been shown to stimulate nerve health, growth, and repair.
Shiitake: Unique compounds in shiitake mushrooms have been shown to relax blood vessels, stimulate the immune system, as well as have direct effects against bacteria, viruses, and parasites.
Maitake: These mushrooms have research-backed immune-boosting properties, ramping up the body’s natural killer cell activity along with promoting the release of various immune cytokines responsible for combating cancer and infection.
Enokitake: Widely consumed as a food and known commonly as the golden-needle mushroom, enokitake mushrooms are being researched for their anti-tumor, anti-hypertensive, anti-cholesterol, antioxidant, and brain/ cognitive boosting compounds.
Agaric blazei: Native to Brazil, these mushrooms are being researched for their anti-viral, anti-diabetic, immune stimulating and anti-cancer properties.
Agaric blazei mushroom compounds appear to act against cancer cells through a variety of pathways, including stimulation of natural killer cells, activation of anti-cancer genetic pathways, and induction of cancer cell suicide (apoptosis).
In addition to their anti-cancer properties, they may also have aromatic hydrazines, a known carcinogen in animals and possibly carcinogen in humans–the research at this point is inconclusive, so I wouldn’t worry about it.
Meshima: Also known as sanghyang mushrooms, these mushrooms have been used in Asia for thousands of years. Current research is exploring anti-inflammatory properties as well as potential blood-pressure lowering/ arterial health promoting properties attributed to meshima mushrooms.
But don’t worry, you don’t need to be a celebrity to enjoy the Four Sigmatic Mushroom Blend. They have 1000s of customer reviews–and a 4.8 average rating..
GMP refers to the FDA standards for Good Manufacturing Practices. Such practices ensure processes are adequately designed, tested, and controlled to allow for product:
In other words, it’s the stamp approval that what they claim to be true about what is in their supplement… is actually in their supplement.
You may think that’s obvious–but unfortunately, there are tons of companies that scam people with phony products.
As a rule of thumb, if you want to make sure the supplement you’re using is high-quality, always look for GMP certification and 3rd party testing.
GMP and 3rd party certifications aside, this powerhouse mushroom blend is also certified Organic and tastes delicious–perfect for adding to your smoothie, tea, or morning cup of joe.
Final thoughts: The Four Sigmatic Mushroom Blend offers a great variety of interesting mushroom species from around the globe. Mushrooms like tremella, agaric blazai, enokotaki, and meshima can be difficult to find in other blends. The brand also demonstrates a commitment to product quality and safety with third-party testing, as well as GMP certification. Four Sigmatic is a powerhouse brand, with celebrity athlete endorsement. If you’re looking for a top-quality mushroom supplement, hands down, this is the one you want.
The Om Organic Fit Mushroom Blend Superfood Powder deserves the #2 spot on the top five list. In fact, the brand has some excellent selling points. Located in California, the mushrooms are all grown in the U.S.A. by the company in a controlled environment.
Of the top 5 supplements listed, this is the only product in which all the mushrooms are sourced exclusively from the U.S.A.
As such, there is absolute control over the sourcing of the mushrooms and far greater assurance of purity. They are third-party tested for quality assurance. The Om Fit formula combines three powerhouse mushrooms:
Cordyceps may support athletic performance and vitality as research indicates the following potential effects:
As already noted above, lion’s mane is believed to enhance cognitive / brain function as well as promote neuronal health and mitigate the effects of stress. Intense training can tax the nervous system, hormone balance, and the immune system. Lion’s mane mushrooms may facilitate central nervous system support and stress recovery, though more research is needed.
The Om Fit Blend contains reishi mushrooms due to their anti-inflammatory, cardiovascular health, and immune system supportive properties.
While there is less variety in this product, that may be a good thing as you get a higher dose of each of these 3 amazing mushrooms in each 2 gram serving!!!
The reviews note some impressive fitness benefits! I attached a screenshot of some notables ones.
Final thoughts: The Om brand is a solid company with an excellent product. This Mushroom superfood blend meets the highest purity standards, and provides the most concentrated dose of cordyceps, lion’s mane, and reishi mushrooms of all the products listed here! Given the research support for these mushrooms, this blend makes an excellent addition to your fitness regimen!
If you’re looking for the perfect nutrient-rich replacement to your morning cup of joe, so you can start your day off right, this is the one you want
Four Sigmatic’s Morning Routine combines single origin, organic, fair-trade arabica coffee beans (aka energy) with the powerhouse mushrooms chaga and lion’s mane.
Fun fact, when coffee rations were limited during WWII, chaga mushrooms were actually used as a coffee substitute in countries such as Russia and Finland!
By blending coffee with chaga and lion’s mane mushrooms, your brain enjoys a mental boost from the lion’s mane mushrooms while your body will appreciate the antioxidant, anti-cancer properties of chaga mushrooms.
Can you think of a better way to start your morning?
With arich coffee taste, it is perfect for that much-needed energy boost to start the day without the late afternoon crash.
And the reviews definitely back it up–the Four Sigmatic Morning Routine coffee enjoys a 4.8 out of 5 rating and over 1633 reviews–both of which are fantastic.
Final thoughts: If you habitually buy expensive coffee, this may be a good swap for you. Highly rated on taste, third-party tested for quality, and produced under GMP-certified conditions, Four Sigmatic Coffee With Lion’s Mane & Chaga Mushrooms offers a unique taste and a bevy of nutrients–perfect for starting your day on the right foot.
While Four Sigmatic has the most variety of mushrooms, what I love about Nature Realm’s Sacred 7 Mushroom Extract and why it got our #4 spot, is that it contains one amazing mushroom not contained in our other options–the turkey tail mushroom.
I’ll go into detail about the research behind turkey tail mushrooms–and its promising research for use in patients going through chemotherapy (always coordinate with your health care provider before using a product for a medical condition!)–but first let’s dive into some other aspects I love about this supplement (and why you should, too).
The Sacred 7 Mushroom Extract powder contains seven researched-backed mushrooms–all of which are certified organic. Their chaga mushrooms are wild-harvested in Alaska, the lion’s mane mushrooms are grown in California, while the rest are grown or wild-harvested in China.
Beyond the mushroom supplement itself, I love to support companies with a greater, positive mission–and Naturerealm is one of those great companies. A portion of each sale you make goes to support the Rainforest Trust, which helps to preserve rainforests throughout the world.
Back to the supplement benefits itself.
The Sacred 7 Mushroom Extract powder contains 100mg of each the following seven amazing, highly-researched mushroom species per 700mg serving:
While six of the mushrooms listed above are also contained in the Four Sigmatic product (and described above), like I mentioned above, the Four Sigmatic product does not have turkey tail mushrooms.
The research regarding turkey tail mushrooms is pretty impressive. As one of the most researched medicinal mushrooms, health-promoting properties for turkey tail mushrooms include restoration of immune function after chemotherapy, organ-protective effects, direct toxicity against various cancers, and powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
The reviews are very positive for this product. It enjoys a 4.5 out of 5 star rating on Amazon.com based on more than 1,600 reviews.
While I would still recommend our top 3 options above this one, it’s still a fantastic choice–and with 7 quality mushrooms, 3rd party certification, excellent reviews, and ingredients that include one of my favorite mushrooms, turkey tail, it’s tough to go wrong here. It may even be worth rotating every now and then with the Four Sigmatic blend, for added variety.
Final thoughts: Similar to the Four Sigmatic brand, Naturealm demonstrates commitment to safety and quality through third-party testing and GMP certification. The Sacred 7 mushrooms selected have excellent safety profiles and a strong research base. Finally, the inclusion of turkey-tail mushrooms in my view adds a lot of value to this particular product. Turkey tail mushrooms have a more solid research base than some of the more rare mushrooms used in the Four Sigmatic Blend.
Formulated by Paul Stamet’s own company, Host Defense, this mushroom blend offers the convenience of capsules while providing 143 mg of 7 powerful mushrooms per 2-capsule serving. These mushrooms are as follows:
All of these mushrooms can be found (plus more) in the #1 recommended Four Sigmatic Mushroom Blend listed above. However, the company Host Defense takes a different, unique approach to their products–the use of the root structure mycelium as opposed to the mushroom fruit body.
Founder Paul Stamets notes that mycelium serves as the immune system for the mushroom, having to protect the root structure from billions of viruses and bacteria found naturally in the soil and forest debris. Mycelium can survive extremes, while the mushroom fruit itself decays rapidly after fruiting.
A genius with a mission, that’s who…and that is no exaggeration. Paul Stamets is larger than life. Type his name into Spotify, YouTube, or any podcast medium and you will immediately find him doing TED talks, interviews with Joe Rogan, Tim Ferris, and speaking at conventions such as the California Institute of Integral Studies.
Paul Stamets holds numerous patents and has authored six books. He has collaborated with the Department of Defense and the National Institute of Health as a researcher, as well as mushroom supplier. The work he has done with these organizations has been for the purpose of studying anti-viral and anti-cancer properties in mushrooms.
He is also working intently to study how compounds in mycelium may help in the fight against the global problem of bee-colony collapse. Finally, he is a passionate advocate for the preservation of old-growth forests, noting the ecological and medicinal benefits provided by this precious resource!
Want to support a person like that, while enjoying a solid, research-backed product? I do. Even though this is listed as the #5 supplement, it is one I personally purchased due to my belief in his mission (I am anxiously awaiting its arrival!)
Stamets 7 boasts a 5-star rating on Amazon based on over 1,000 reviews:
Final thoughts: Stamets 7 is a solid product, with science supporting the health effects of each of the included mushroom species. The company Host Defense was founded by a literal genius who has devoted his life to studying the health effects of mushrooms–Paul Stemets. While the product is not GMP certified, independent testing of the Host Defense reishi blend by consumerlabs.com found no heavy metals or contaminants. As noted, I have personally purchased this product.
Product safety depends on a variety of factors. As noted in the content above, buying mushrooms from a reputable company is a must. Many people have been harmed from contaminated supplements in general, with injuries such as severe kidney and liver damage, among other issues.
Third party testing, adherence to GMP standards, along with general company reputation are factors for consideration when buying any supplement. For the products above, many of the mushrooms included are consumed widely across the world as foods and in traditional medicine. Allergies and sensitivities for any food item is possible.
Reishi mushrooms are known to have contributed to liver injuries in two documented cases, though this effect appears to be rare given global use and consumption. If you are concerned, there are options above that do not contain reishi mushrooms.
Naturealm does an excellent breakdown of this question. Research on mushrooms suggests effects such as lower cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, improved regulation of cortisol levels, anti-inflammatory, nerve protective effects, and potential anti-cancer effects. These benefits are not necessarily something you “feel,” yet can have significant long term impacts on your health status.
Per the reviews, some users report improved exercise tolerance, less infections, improved focus, among other effects. Anecdotal reports such as these may or may not have merit. Either way, whether or not you “feel” something, the research suggests that the mushrooms above can have a positive impact on your health and immune system.
Both traditional use dating thousands of years into our past, along with modern research suggests stimulating effects of mushrooms on our immune systems along with other health promoting effects (including cardiovascular, anti-viral, anti-diabetic, anti-bacterial, and nerve health benefits for example). Humans actually have immune receptors that specifically interact with beta-glucans found in mushroom cell walls. Mushrooms have been consumed since antiquity for health and medicinal purposes.
Despite use and consumption since antiquity, the research on mushrooms can be considered “young.” Many of the studies have been conducted in petri dishes on cancer cell and tissue lines or on lab animals. However, there has been a number of research studies including the gold standard interventional double-blinded, randomized controlled trials using human subjects with positive findings. These studies tended to be small in size, but hold a lot of promise.
Mushroom blends are an excellent, convenient way to augment your diet and training. These blends include a great variety of mushrooms consumed for dietary and medicinal purposes from the jungles of Brazil, to the Himalayin mountains, the Pacific northwest, and around the globe.
As mentioned earlier, if you are looking for the best mushroom supplement with the greatest variety of mushrooms, this 10 mushroom blend from Four Sigmatics is the one you want.
If you are a fitness enthusiast, I love this mushroom blend from Om–it has a strong concentration of 3 top mushrooms that have been shown to help with performance.
Whatever option you choose, there is growing evidence in the scientific literature that leads to one conclusion–if you are looking to improve your health, adding mushrooms to your diet is a fantastic idea.
